Exodus 24

Yesterday we finished our series in Exodus 19-24 looking at a meal – a wonderful glimpse of the intimate relationship with God on offer to Israel, as Moses, the future priests, and 70 elders eat and drink in God’s presence on God’s mountain.

Two big events come after the giving of the law, paving the way for this meal: the Israelites pledge total obedience to all that God has spoken; and they’re sprinkled with the blood of sacrificed oxen.

For the Christian, too, life is one of pledging to obey, covered by the blood. We pledge obedience with God’s help, and we do so trusting only in the blood of Jesus – far better than the blood of oxen – which brought us into relationship with God and covered our sins.
